20 of The Ugliest Animals On Earth
1 – The Blobfish
Doesn’t this little guy look miserable? Mind you, he doesn’t have much to be happy about! He recently won a poll to find a mascot for the ‘Ugly Animal Preservation Society.’ The blobfish is exactly what it sounds like – a fish which is basically a blob. It has very few muscles and can only move really slowly. He needs to just lay on the ocean bed and wait on something he can eat happening to pass by! Personally, I think mr grumpy here is actually kinda cute!
2 – The Aye Aye
Bless this little guy’s heart! The Aye Aye is endangered largely because in his native land of Madagascar they are seen as an omen of evil and most people will kill them on site. Sure he is a little creepy looking, but he probably is not evil – just misunderstood!
3 – Chinese Crested Hairless Dog
This is Miss Ellie and she holds the dubious honour of being name ‘World’s Ugliest Dog’ in 2009 in two separate contests! She is a Chinese Crested Hairless Dog and with her scrawny, naked body, bug eyes and drooping tongue it is not difficult to see why.
4 – Celestial Eyed Gold Fish
These totally look like cartoon characters! These are actually Celestial Eyed Gold Fish and they are characterised by those large bulging eyeballs and a split double tail. The tails are beautiful, but those eyes are ugly!
Star Nosed Moles
If this thing appeared in my yard I would totally assume that the alien invasion had begun! It looks like some kind of crazy alien creature. In fact, it is a breed of mole known as the Star Nosed Mole. The nose is made up of 22 fleshy tentacles which are very sensitive to make up for the creature’s terrible eyesight.
6 – Tarsiers
This little critter is actually kind of cute, but Philippine Tarsiers are considered ampng the ugliest animals in the world. They are tiny little guys which fit in the palm of your hand. They have big bug eyes which are larger than their brains and they have human looking hands and feet. We aren’t sure we would say it was ugly – just a little odd
Soft Shell Turtle
Is it just me or does this guy look like a turtle that got left in the sun and melted? He is a soft shell turtle – a rare species that was only recently discovered in Cambodia.
8 – Oriental Yeti
This hairless little beastie was picked up by hunters in a remote part of China and it has been totally unidentifiable! Scientists have no idea what the creature is and last we heard there were dna tests being done to determine if it was some common animal suffering from terrible mange. It is described as a cross between a bear and a kangaroo!
9 – Proboscis Monkey20 of The Ugliest Animals On Earth
This endangered species of monkey actually looks fairly normal apart from the huge bulbous nose. These monkies will honk their nose in order to communicate and the nose is said to straighten out as it honks.
10 -Chikilidae
You would be forgiven for thinking that this is just an earthworm. In fact it is a rare legless amphibian from India. In this photo it is sitting on its eggs. Villagers in India discovered then in wet soil and thought they were tiny snakes.
11 – Baird Tapir
This big guy is the biggest mammal in Mexico and South America. They can reach lengths of 6.6 feet and almost 4 feet in height. They also have a real ugly face and strange feet. The front feet have 4 toes and the back ones have 3 toes!
12 – Naked Mole Rat
Naked Mole Rats spend the majority of their lives underground in the dark, so it probably doesn’t really matter what they look like. They are just about blind and use those huge protruding teeth to dig through the ground. They live in large colony groups with a queen who is responsible for breeding.
13 – Monkfish
If we had to describe Monkfish we would say it is delicious, but ugly! Check out all of those razor sharp teeth! The ironic thing is that in spite of those gnashers and an incredibly powerful jaw these huge fish simply swallow their prey whole! The Monkfish can grew to three feet in length.
11. American Honey Bee
This fuzzy guy doesn’t make you honey to enjoy with tea, but instead is the most deadly bee on earth. He is so deadly, in fact, that he will hunt you if you get into his territory. They have been known to chase their victims for a few miles! Their buzzes are louder than other types of bees, so you will know just when you have to run away.
14 – Lorikeets
These birds might look sick, but they are actually very healthy newborn Lorikeets which are native to Eastern Australia. They have a real life case of ugly duckling syndrome! Even although they look pretty ugly now, by the time they reach adulthood they will become beautiful rainbow coloured birds.
15 – Pangolin
This scaly skinned mammal finds its home in Asia and Africa. It looks like a reptile, but it is actually a mammal and can roll up into a ball!
16 -Canadian Sphynx Kitten
These hairless cats give me the creeps! They may be ugly little critters but in the cat world they are highly prized and are known to be incredibly affectionate with their owners
17 – Long-Spined Sea Scorpion
Talk about false advertising! This isn’t a sea dwelling scorpion. It is actually a really ugly fish that swims off the shores of Northern Europe.
18 – Alligator Snapping Turtle
This is the largest species of turtle in all of North America. He looks pretty mean and he has the power to back it up. He not only has a powerful bite, but also a triple row of spikes on his back. This is one turtle you do not want to mess with
19 – California Condor
Condors are often thought of as beautiful and graceful birds, but the California Condor is a member of the vulture family and is certainly not winning any beauty contests any time soon. These are the largest terrestrial birds in America and also one of the oldest. They live to be up to 80 years old!
20 -Yellow Crested Cockatoo
When these birds are young they are scraggly, almost bald and cannot fly. However, like the Lorikeets, once they reach adulthood they grow pretty white and yellow plummage and will take flight.
This is not just a site.
